An impressive gallop at Matamata this morning drew attention to Kitaya’s Ellerslie weekend prospects.
Working on the sand, Kitaya (Fawcett) had pace on from the start of his 1000-metre hitout, recording 1:00.8 for the distance and 35.6 for the final section. With three minor placings from five domestic starts, the former Hong Kong galloper doesn’t have to improve a lot to feature in the Rating 85 1600 at Ellerslie on Saturday.
Kamikaze Rebel (Lammas) put in a good trial for Ellerslie with 1000m in 1:05, hitting the line strongly after a final 600m in 36.3. Hot In High Heels (S Turner) strode over 1200m in 1:20.2, 1000m in 1:06 and 600m in 38.2.
Heroic Valour (McNab) was allowed to stretch out over the last 800m of his work in 58.4 and 41.4, while Elettra (Wratten) was well held over 1000m in 1:13.8 and 43.5.
Over the same ground Galaxy Miss (Fawcett), a likely runner at Ellerslie, returned 1:12.5 and 38.7, Winehouse (Lammas) took 1:13 and 42.6, and Boy Wonder (Clements) 1:15.2 and 42.6.
Nomisma (Dowling), who is now with Danica Guy, was timed over 1000m in 1:15.2 and 44.2. Dontbreakmyheart (P Brosnan) covered the last 1200m of long work in 1:30.2 and 43.4.
On the heavy course proper, where work took place right-handed 18 metres out, talented sprinter Splurge (McNab) finished off with a final 600m in 39.7. He is in good order to resume at Ellerslie, but will run only if the track is not too heavy.
Sleeping Beauty (R Jones) did similar work, completing her last 600m in good style in 38.2, while The Matrix (J Collett), likewise entered for Ellerslie, was paired with a Pins gelding (Abel) for a final 600m in 38.8.
Panella (A Jones) and Miss Elegante (Fawcett) worked over 1200m in 1.25.5 and 600m in 39.4. Pure Lorde (Gorham), who is likely to start next at Te Rapa on Friday week, covered the same ground in 1:28.9 and 42.2.
On the all-weather track Speewah (S McKay) travelled up well at the end of 1000m in 1:05 and 600m in 36.7.
Tiptronic (Gorham) quickened over the last 1200m of striding work to return 1:24.7 and 40.6 for his final 600. Hard Sprung (S McKay) and Vinerof (Waara) were timed over 800m in 52.6 and 600m in 37.7.
