Promising colt The Boy Wonder looked ready for the step up to black-type company when he worked impressively at Matamata this morning.

Galloping 18 metres out on a dead course proper, The Boy Wonder (Bayliss) was sent over ground and built momentum to run 1200m in 1:16.9. He was timed over the last 1000m in 1:03.1 and hit the line hard with a final 600m in 36.2.

The Boy Wonder left a big impression when clearing maiden grade at his last start and having made the right progress since, he will be an interesting runner in Friday’s Wellington Stakes at Otaki. He will be ridden in the three-year-old feature by Melbourne jockey Patrick Moloney, filling in for suspended Ballymore Stables jockey Jake Bayliss.

Moloney is also booked for stablemates Bocce and Sound Works at Otaki and On The Rocks at Ellerslie on Saturday. All three shaped up well in solo work, On the Rocks (Bayliss) looking the part on the course proper, where he covered 1200m in 1:21.2, 1:06.3 and 37.6. He also broke maidens at his last start and has likewise trained on well.  

Otaki two-year-old candidate Bocce (Bayliss) was professional when finishing off strongly with 600m on the course proper in 41.2. The Foxwedge colt won his first trial and also shaped pleasingly when ridden back in the next.

Sound Works (Bayliss) galloped on the plough, where she cut out 1000m in 1:03.2 and reeled off a slick final 600m in 35.6. She looks improved for her first-up run.

Also on the plough, Hushed (Lammas) prepared for Saturday’s Wanganui Cup when paired with Otaki runner Princess Davone over 1000m in 1:03 and 36.5, while stablemates Chambord (Lammas) and Motivation (Burdan) also shaped well over the same distance in 1:03.7 and 36.8. Chambord runs in Friday’s Levin Stakes and Motivation, the winner of his only start, is an entry for the Trevor Eagle Memorial at Ellerslie.

Otaki two-year-old candidate Nirvana In Fire (Bayliss) caught the eye when she and Princess Rihanna (S Weatherley) ran their last 800m in 49.5 and 600m in 36.2. Sweet Leader (S Weatherley) and Piazza (Ravi), respective entries for Ellerslie and Otaki, were also in dashing form over 1000m in 1:01.7 and 36.

Splurge (Lammas) ran a solid trial for he Eagle Technology Stakes at Ellerslie when he ran a solo 1200m in 1:18.4, 1:04.2 and 37. Also  over ground, Sasanof’s Hero (P Turner) covered his last 1200m in 1:20.4, 1:03.8 and 36.2, Charles Road (S Weatherley) 1:21.4, 1:06.5 and 37.3, Hot In High Heels (N Turner) 1:23.8, 1:04.5 and 36.8, Pure Lorde (Handley) and Four Degrees (Gorham) 1:20.2, 1:04.9 and 37.2, and Darci Deniro (Khan) and Flying Trapeze (Cox) 1:23.4, 1:08.5 and 39.7.

Wide Awake (Burdan) and Don’tblamethemusic (Lammas) shaped up well for Ellerslie over 1000m in 1:03 and 36.4, while Hay Tiger (R Jones) and Princess Kereru (N Turner) had pace on as they recorded 1:00.2 and 35.5.

Another to show up over 1000m was Clarify (S McKay) in 1:02.4 and 36.3, Yearn (Leveque) was well contained as she returned 1:07.8 and 38.6, Roll The Gold (Fawcett) took 1:07.6 and 36.7, and Wild Child (Bayliss) and Barcelo (S McKay) 1:03.4 and 36.8.

Others to gallop 1000m included Battle Time (K McQuade) in 1:01.2 and 35.8, Ali Baba (Bayliss) 1:07.5 and 37.8, and Saffron Lady (Magee) 1:07.8 and 37.4.

Eagle Technology Stakes entry Tessastock (Handley) was paired with Tiptronic (Gorham) in smart work over 1200m in 1:21.5, 1:05.5 and 37.8.

On the all-weather track Volpe Veloce (Roff) looked happy in her work over 1000m in 1:07 and 38.2, while stablemates Suliman (Cox) and Tourmaline (Panna) strode over 1200m in 1:19.2 and 37.7.
