Uncle Ern and King Khalid flagged their prospects for Hastings next week with a smart gallop at Matamata this morning.

On the sand Uncle Ern (C Grylls) and King Khalid (S McKay) cut out 1000m in 1:02.5 and finished off with an impressive final 600m in 35.4. The Jacob McKay-trained pair will be entered for the special maiden sprint on the first day of the Hawke’s Bay carnival.

On the heavy course proper, where work took place right-handed, Richard Of Yorke (Bosson) got through his work well to complete 1200m in 1:28.8 and 600m in 41. The consistent gelding is likely to head to New Plymouth this weekend.

Ali Baba (McCall) prepared for the maiden hurdle at Ellerslie on Saturday with long work on the course proper, finishing off with a solid 1200m in 1:21.9 and 600m in 40.2. Stablemate Resurrect (Lammas) worked away quietly before completing 1200m in 1:28.7, quickening over the final 600m in 40.7.

Ellerslie entry Star Treasure (C Grylls) ran the final 600m of his work in 39, while Royal Patch (Yanagida) had an easier time over his last 600m in 43.3 and Patch Man (Yanagida) returned 45.2. Others to work on the sand included Sagunto (S McKay) and Matuzalem (P McKay), who were timed from the 800m in a tidy 48.8 and 36.2.

The Green Dragon (Coleman) was well held over 800m in 57 and 41.6, while Princess Kereru (Lammas) was allowed to roll in from the 600m in 46.2.
