Avantage and Spring Heat underlined their readiness for Saturday’s Telegraph with smart work at Matamata on Tuesday morning.
Galloping on the course proper, which was at the upper end of dead after overnight rain, Avantage (Bosson) was paired with fellow Trentham candidate Festivity (McNab) over 1000m in 1:06.5, quickening readily from the 600m in 36.7. Telegraph favourite Avantage is right on her game ahead of the big Trentham sprint, while impressive recent debut winner Festivity is also in good order for Saturday’s three-year-old 1200.
Spring Heat (Grylls) enhanced her Telegraph prospects with impressive solo work, cutting out 1000m in 1:03.4 and 600m in 36.5. While the weight-for-age conditions might put her at a disadvantage, there is no doubt she is at peak fitness ahead of the weekend.
Thorndon Mile entries On The Rocks, Yearn and The Mitigator also worked well. On the course proper On The Rocks (McNab) was as deceptive as ever in his solo work over 1200m in 1:19.1, 1:04.3 and 37.6, while Yearn (Tynan) ran evenly over the same distance in 1:18.9, 1:04.1 and 38.8.
The Mitigator (P McKay) worked on the big sand, where he and stablemate Iron Eagle (S McKay) were timed from the 800m in 49.8, with their final 600m in a smart 35.4. Thorndon entries Watch This Space (Danis) and Livin On A Prayer (Kozaki) cut out 1000m in 1:01.8 and 36.6.
Back on the course proper, Cool Aza Beel (Bosson) looked back on target for the Karaka Million when he and Willpower (McNab) strode over 1000m in 1:07 and 37.6. After being forced out of his weekend engagement at Ellerslie, Cool Aza Beel will have his Karaka Million lead-up at Tauranga on Friday.
Mr President (Yoto) and Terracotta (Yanagida) did sound work ahead of Te Rapa on Sunday, striding over 1000m in 1:03 and 36.5. Tauranga entries Swing Note (T Harris) and Shezathinka (Kamaruddin) were also solid over 1200m in 1:18.2, 1:04 and 36.7.
Over the same ground Virtuoso Lad (T Harris) recorded 1:23.4, 1:06.8 and 38.4, The Green Dragon (Coleman) and Rocking Along (Lammas) took 1:20.6, 1:05.2 and 37.8, Le Sablier (Tynan) 1:21.7, 1:06.5 and 39.3, Voler Pour Moi (Yanagida) 1:23.2, 1:07.5 and 38.4, and Bravissimo (Fawcett) 1:21.8, 1:07.6 and 40.2.
Cia Siu Bao (Yanagida), who heads to Trentham this weekend, began steadily to run 1000m in 1:10.4 and quickened from the 600m in 37.8. Tauranga entries Puysegur (T Harris) and Fabulous Flight (Roustoby) covered the same ground in 1:06.9 and 37.3, while Ginger Too (McNab) and Lucky Shark (Bosson) took 1:06.1 and 37.2. Show Boat (Leighton) strode from the 800m in 55.2 and 40.8.
On the No. 2 sand Incantesimo (Burdan) and En Soie (T Johnson) were in dashing form ahead of their Tauranga assignments, cutting out 1200m in 1:15.4, 1:02 and 35.9. Exquisita (Wratten) and Red Hussar (T Johnson) covered the same ground in 1:22, 1:05.4 and 37.2.
Levante (Pinn) and Princess Kereru (Winter) got through steady work, with their last 800m in 58.2 and 600m in 42.6.
