A large number of feature race candidates for Saturday’s local meeting as well as Otaki made for a busy training session at Matamata on Tuesday.

Karaka Million winner Cool Aza Beel (McNab) and recent debut winner Need I Say More (Bosson) were paired over 1000m on the plough, cutting out the distance in 1:03.4 and hitting the line well with a final 600m in 36.2. The Jamie Richards-trained duo are in good order for their weekend clash in the Waikato Stud Slipper.

Matamata Breeders’ Stakes rivals Escudo (Waddell) and Perfectionist (Yanagida) also got through smart work over 1000m in 1:02.5 and 36.4, while Laced With Gold (Grylls) and Kelly Marie (Turner) weren’t extended over the same ground in their Breeders’ Stakes hitout, clocking 1:05.5 and 37.2.

Otaki Group One candidate Avantage (T Harris) was impressive when she and Matamata entry Leaderboard (Bosson) galloped strongly over 1200m in 1:18.2, with the last 1000m in 1:01.6 and 600m in 36.4. Stablemate Prise de Fer (T Harris) prepared for the Otaki feature in company with Holsty (Kozaki), cutting out the last 1000m in 1:04 and 600m in 36.6.

On the course proper, which was dead with the rail in the true position, Supera had raceday jockey Danielle Johnson in the saddle when she worked keenly from the 1200m mark to run the distance in 1:13.2, 1000m in 1:01.7 and maintaining a solid gallop over the final 600m in 36.7.

Matamata two-year-old entries Dragon Queen (Lammas) and Snapper (Elliot) were impressive cutting out 1000m in 1:04.9 and 36.6. Polly Grey (S Weatherley) and Germanicus (Fawcett) were deceptive over the same distance in 1:01.2 and 35. Last-start Anniversary Mile winner Germanicus will run in the Haunui Farm WFA at Otaki, while Polly Grey is in good order to resume in the new fillies and mares’ 1400 on the Breeders’ Stakes card, the Lisa Chittick Plate.

Race rival Yearn (Tynan) was unextended in her work over 1000m in 1:06.6 and 37.1. Unbeaten filly Levante (Elliot) prepared for the local meeting in company with Shoshone (Lammas) over a smart 1000m in 1:03.7 and 35.4. Shoshone runs at Hastings next week.

On the big sand, Otaki entries The Mitigator (P McKay) and Americo (S McKay) began easily before quickening readily over 1000m in 1:05.3 and 600m in 36.4. Imelda Mary (Danis) and Diamond Heist (Kozaki) covered the same ground in 1:04.6 and 37, while Watch This Space (Danis) and Livin On A Prayer (Kozaki) were timed over 800m in 50.4 and 36.8.

Back on the plough Kaimai Stakes rivals Te Akau Caliburn (Bosson) and Scott Base (McNab) strode over 1200m in 1:22.5, 1:05.7 and 36.6, while Hay Tiger (S Weatherley) prepared for the same race in company with Wairoa Cup entry Swing Note (T Harris) with smart work over 1200m in 1:18.8, 1:02.8 and 36.3.

Wairoa-bound Markus Aurelius (Bosson) and Fabulous Flight (KC Walters) were in good form over 1000m in 1:03.8 and 36.4. Over the same ground Jewel Of Patch (Yanagida) took 1:06.2 and 37.4, Avoca Willow (M Brosnan) 1:07.5 and 39.2, Siracusa (S Collett) and Palamedes (Ritchie) 1:02.5 and 36.8, Master Painton (Grylls) 1:07 and 37.5, Tweedledee (Yanagida) 1:03.7 and 36.8, Cha Siu Bao (Waddell) 1:05.5 and 37.4, and Nothing Compares (Grylls) 1:11.2 and 39.7.

Za Za Gabor (Lammas) and Hozel Rocket (Reid) were not after time over 1200m in 1:26.5 and 39.8. Joe’s Legacy (K Price) completed striding work with 800m in 49.8 and 36.5, while Age Of Fire (McNab) and Top Brass (Burdan) ran the same trip in 53 and 37.6.
