Lily D’Or and Gus The Maverick were in good form at Matamata on Tuesday morning as they prepared for Saturday’s season-opening race meeting on their home track.

Working against the rail set at three metres on the slow course proper, Lily D’Or (Dellow) and Gus The Maverick (Lammas) were evenly matched over a solidly run 1000m in 1:02.8 and maintaining their momentum for a final 600m in 37.

The Moroney/Gerard-trained pair had the benefit of Saturday’s unblemished strip, but it was still impressive work. Lily D’Or showed real potential in her last campaign, while Gus The Maverick won a recent trial. Both are capable of forward showings in their 1200-metre assignments on the weekend.

All other course proper gallops took place 20 metres out, where Midnight Invasion (Kareem) shaped well for the weekend when she cut out 1000m in 1:09.6 and 38.7. The Karyn McQuade-trained mare doesn’t have to improve much on her solid fresh-up fourth at Ellerslie recently.

Shoshone (S Collett) had plenty left at the end of 1000m in 1:10.4 and 41. She has trained on well from her fresh-up Ellerslie win. Red Chois (C Grylls) and Thunder (Fawcett) worked well in preparation for the weekend with 1000m in 1:09.4 and 40.4.

Matamata entry Palamedes (J Ritchie) went well in a solo gallop over 1000m in 1:06.8 and 39.5, last-start winner Jakama Krystal (Burdan) was strong at the end of 1000m with It’s A Kinda Magic (Fawcett) in 1:09.4 and 39, and Cavallo Veloce (S McKay) and Miracles Happen (Burdan) recorded 1:08.8 and 38.9.

Codecracker (S Collett) hit out well over 1200m in 1:21, 1:07.2 and 40.2. Over the same distance Garnet (Wratten) and Suliman (K Singh) took 1:22.5, 1:07.9 and 41.3, while Oceanic (J Ritchie) cut out 1000m in 1:07.6 and 40.

Princess Kereru (Winter) was steady through the early stages on the way to running 1000m in 1:12.8 and 600m in 39.8. Johnny Canuck (Wratten) and Justastate (K Singh) ran 1000m together 1:11.2 and 40.3.

On the No. 1 sand Watch This Space (Hillis) and Livin’ On A Prayer (Danis) were in good form over 1000m in 1:04.2 and 36.9. Teen Titan (Fawcett) travelled well over the same ground in 1:04.8 and 47.2, while Imelda Mary (Hillis) had an easy time over 1000m in 1:14.8 and 43.5.

On the No. 2 sand Easy M’Lady (S Collett) shaped up well for Saturday with smart work over 1000m in 1:05 and 38.5.

Fleurgundy (Fawcett) ran the same distance in 1:06.8 and 37.2, while Sigiriya (C Cole) and McGowan (S Weatherley) took 1:07.9 and 37.5, and Devon (Cole) 1:08.7 and 40.2. Supera (D Johnson) travelled sweetly over 800m in 52.7 and 37.8. She will have a hitout between races on Saturday.

Magic Cannon (M Brosnan) and Villa Nine (J Brosnan) were paired over 1200m in 1:20.9, 1:06.7 and 39.2, while Richard Of Yorke (Montes de Oca) was kept to 1.29.4 and 45.2 over the same distance.

Top Brass (Burdan) and Equinox (Parmar) were timed from the 800m in 57.2 and 40, Ruby Negroni (J Price) and an Ocean Park gelding (K Price) clocked 50.6 and 36.6, and Summer Monsoon (Burdan) ran his last 600m in 39.

The Arabian Myth (K McQuade) strode over the last 1200m of his work in 1:19.2, 1:05.2 and 38.8. Tiptronic (Wratten) looked bright in an easy 1000m in 1:15.2 and 44.8, while React (Pinn) ran the same distance in 1:15.4 and 43.4.
