Rocket Spade was one of a number of talented three-year-olds preparing for weekend feature racing at Te Rapa when he galloped impressively at Matamata on Tuesday morning.

On the course proper, where the going was slow 22 metres out, Rocket Spade (Yanagida) was accompanied by his senior stablemate Tweedledee (Yuto) through a solidly run 1000m in 1:04.5, with the final 600m in 38.5. Rocket Spade will have his final NZ 2000 Guineas lead-up in Saturday’s James & Annie Sarten Memorial.

Race rival Need I Say More (Bosson) went with Soliloquy Stakes entry Kahma Lass (T Harris) over 1000m in 1:08.7, finishing off well with 600m in 37.7. NZ 1000 Guineas favourite Tinker McPhee (P Singh) wasn’t after time when preparing for the Soliloquy Stakes with solo work over 1000m in 1:15.2 and 44.

Soliloquy Stakes entries Tokorangi (Reid) and Dragon Queen (Yanagida) finished off strongly over 1000m in 1:07 and 38.6. Race rival Escudo (Yanagida) looked at home in the conditions over the same ground in 1:09.6 and 38.2. Kelly Renee (C Grylls), another for the Te Rapa fillies’ feature, was paired with Thunder (Turner) over 1000m in 1:06.1 and 38.2.

Savvy Yong Blonk (Bosson) and Fashion Shoot (T Harris) did solid work over 1000m in 1:05.5 and 38.3. Savy Yong Bong runs in the Thompson at Trentham on Sunday, while her stablemate will be entered for Te Rapa and Riccarton.

Against the course proper rail in the seven-metre position, Vainglory (Newman) tracked Sweet Molly Malone (S Collett) before getting alongside to complete 1000m in an impressive 1:03.3 and 36.3. Vainglory is in good order for her Riccarton trip, while Sweet Molly Malone will run either at New Plymouth on Friday or Te Rapa.

Palamos (T Harris) prepared for the Te Rapa juvenile race when working with Quattro Katie (Bosson) over 800m in 54.8 and 39.6. Lavaglo (Miller) wasn’t extended in her 1000m hitout in 1:10.3 and 40.5, while Divine Duke (Yuto) went solo over 1200m in 1:24.2, 1:08.6 and 39.2.

Te Rapa entry Vichy (Wratten) went with Devotion In Motion (S Singh) over 1000m in 1:10.7 and 40.6. Others to run 1000m included Gus The Maverick (McCall) and Petrachor (Daley) in 1:06.4 and 38.6, Cuba (P Singh) 1:10.8 and 41.9, Katie Perrie (J Collett) and Elle Aye Lady (S Collett) 1:10.8 and 41.5, Military Step (Burdan) and Zouluminous (Roustoby) 1:07.6 and 38.5, Festivity (Bosson) and Pinultimate (T Harris) 1:06.2 and 38.2, and Amano (Yuto) 1:08.6 and 38.4.

Over 1200m Salt Bay (Yanagida) recorded 1:18.6, 1:05.1 and 39.5, Roll The Gold (Kumar) 1:20.2, 1:06.4 and 40.8, and Kamakaze (S Collett) 1:23.8, 1:04.8 and 39.

Rukuhia (Newman) and Sacre Coeur (Fawcett) ran 800m in 54.2 and 39, Holsty (S Weatherley) and McGowan (Donoghue) clocked 56.8 and 42.3, and Burgundy Rose (Bosson) and Awareness (T Harris) 54.9 and 39.3. New Plymouth entries Vino Bella (Burdan) and Ocean Belle (Durrant) left 1000m behind in 1:07.2 and 38.4.
