Leading Telegraph prospects Avantage and Spring Heat looked right on target for Saturday’s big Trentham sprint when they galloped stylishly at Matamata on Tuesday.

On the plough, Avantage (T Harris) was partnered by Tauranga Friday entry Romantic Lady (Kamaruddin) over a truly-run 1000m in 1:02.8, with the final 600m in 36.4. Avantage has, if anything, improved from her Railway win and will take all sorts of beating in her attempt at a Telegraph double.

Race rival Spring Heat worked solo with raceday jockey Craig Grylls in the saddle, cutting out 1000m in 1:03 and 36.2. She was cruising throughout and like Avantage, has the right form for her weekend assignment.

Jamie Richards’ other big Group One prospect for Trentham, Levin Classic contendor Brando, was ridden by raceday pilot Danielle Johnson in his work with Tauranga entry Weaponry (Bosson) over 1200m in 1:17.6, with the last 1000m in 1:03.2 and 600m in 37.2. Brando has trained on well from his Ellerslie Boxing Day win.

Race rival Tokorangi (McCall) worked on the course proper, where the going was dead at the 17-metre mark. In company with Dragon Queen (Yanagida), the pair had pace on from the 1200m, cutting out the distance in 1:13.4, 1000m in 1:00.2 and 600m in 36. Tokorangi finished off strongly to be shading her companion at the line.

Back on the plough, Lord Painton (P Turner) put in a good trial for Tauranga with a solo 1000m in 1:01.6 and 35.8, while Tauranga two-year-old entries Millefiori (D Johnson) and Sneaky Shark (Bosson) were comfortable over the same trip in 1:03.2 and 36.4.

Lilikoi (T Harris) looked in form for the Anniversary Handicap at Trentham as she cut out 1000m in 1:03.5 and 37.2. Imelda Mary (Miles), looking sharp after her fresh-up Tauranga win, wound up well at the end of her work ahead of a return to the Gate Pa course with a final 600m in 36.2.

Travelling Kate (P Turner) wasn’t after time over 1000m in 1:09.8 and 40, likewise Les Crayeres (D Johnson) in 1:07.4 and 39.5, Karalino (C Grylls) 1:10.8 and 41, and Tumbarumba (Pinn) 1:08.9 and 40.6.

La Velocita (S Weatherley) prepared for Tauranga in company with Kirra Lad (Naeem) over a soundly run 1000m in 1:04.4 and 36.8. Castani (Miller) and Zuma Rock (Newman) took 1:04.2 and 37, Red Hussar (K Singh) and Vichy (Wratten) 1:04.3 and 36.8, Avoca Willow (M Brosnan) 1:04 and 37.2, and Super Syd (Bosson) 1:04 and 37.6.

Sacre Coeur (Tynan) prepared for Tauranga in company with Super Hoof (Fawcett), cutting out their last 1000m of striding work in 1:10.8 and 600m in 40.6. Ali Arc (Wratten) and Carolina Reaper (S Khan) got through 1200m in 1:18.4, 1:03.8 and 37.2, while Prince Canto (McCall) had an easy time over the same distance in 1:28.2 and 42.

On the No. 1 sand, The Mitigator (S McKay) prepared for Trentham with 1000m in 1:06.2 and 37. Stablemate Amarula (P McKay), a rival in the Anniversary, went with Wellesley Stakes entry Wolfgang (S McKay) over 1:07.4, quickening for a final 600m in 35.6.
