Two-year-olds preparing for Saturday’s feature double-header were the centre of attention at Matamata on Tuesday morning.

Candidates for the J Swap Contractors Matamata Breeders’ Stakes and Waikato Stud Slipper were allowed to gallop on the inside of the course proper, which was dead. Karaka Million winner On The Bubbles (Bosson) was paired with Slipper rival Sword Of State (T Harris) in smart work over 1000m in 1000m in 1:01.8, finishing off with a final 600m in 35.5.

On The Bubbles has returned in good order from a brief let-up after his big Ellerslie win, while Sword Of State has trained on well from his home track win a fortnight ago.

Breeders’ Stakes candidate Bonny Lass (C Grylls), the winner of her only start, looked the part in her solo gallop, working away from the 1000m mark to run the trip in 1:04.2 and quickening readily from the 600m in 35.6. North Canterbury visitor Mozzarella was ridden by her Breeders’ Stakes jockey Sam Collett when paired with Novashow (S Weatherley) over a solidly run 1000m in 1:01.5 and 35.4. Novashow, third on debut in a strong form race, led her rival at the finish, however Mozzarella’s trainer Nick Wigley was satisfied with his filly’s work after she had travelled north over the weekend.

Karaka Million placegetter Avonallo (Bosson), who runs in the Slipper, went with Breeders’ Stakes entry Craving (T Harris) over 1000m, recording 1:02.4 and 35.8. Dragon Biscuit (Yanagida) prepared for the Slipper with a solid solo hitout over 1000m in 1:01.8 and 35.6.

Remaining course proper gallops took place 14 metres out, where Lisa Chittick Plate entry Yearn (Tynan) cut out 1000m in 1:05.2, picking up speed to record 36.8 for the final section. Race rival Pinmedown (Yanagida) was paired with Salt Bay over the same ground in 1:06.9 and 37.6.

Katy Perrie (J Collett) and Qiji Swordsman (S Collett) prepared for the weekend over 1200m in 1:1.7.5, picking up the tempo from the 1000m in 1:02.2 and 35.7. Matamata entries Marmellos (Yanagida) and Wasp (McCall) left 1000m behind in 1:04.8 and 37.5.

On the plough Avantage (Bosson) looked ready to take her Group One tally to eight when she and Markus Aurelius (T Harris) cut out 1200m in 1:18.6, 1:02.3 and 36.2. Imelda Mary (Newman) prepared for the Otaki feature in company with Watch This Space (Danis) over a truly run 1200m in 1:16.8, 1:01.8 and 35.2.

Matamata entry Candid Camera (Danis) and Our Alley Cat (S Weatherley) took time honours running 1000m in 1:01.2 and 34.8. Candid Camera has a mixed formline but there’s no denying his capabilities on the right day.

Paisley Park (Wratten) prepared for Saturday’s Kaimai Stakes in a solid hitout with next week’s Lowland Stakes candidate Canuhandleajandal (S Singh) in 1:17.8, 1:02.4 and 35.8. Race rival Ali Arc (S Singh) and Carolina Reaper (Wratten), who runs next in the Sunline Vase at Ellerslie, ran the same distance in 1:19.8, 1:03.5 and 37.2.

Supreme Heights (M Brosnan) caught the eye over 1200m in 1:17.4, 1:01.7 and 35.8. After a big spring campaign she has returned in good form and could be one to watch in the Lisa Chittick Plate. Karalino (C Grylls) prepared for the same race in company with Master Painton (P Turner) over 1000m in 1:05.9 and 36.

Charles Road (Yanagida) and Amano (Yuto) were paired over 1200m in 1:16.8, 1:01.8 and 36.6, while stablemate Voler Pour Moi (Osborne) cut out 1000m in 1:06.1 and 36.2. Equinox (Bosson) and Romantic Lady (T Harris) went together over 1000m in 1:02.1 and 36, Two Madison (Yuto) and Patch Prince (Osborne) returned 1:03.2 and 36.1, Soda (S Weatherley) and Easy M’Lady (Cox) 1:04.7 and 36.8, La Mia Stella (P Brosnan) and Light Brocade (Wratten) 1:03.8 and 35.6, and Hakuna Matata (Miles) 1:06.6 and 37.5.

Communique (P Turner) completed her work well ahead of the Kaimai Stakes, timed over 1200m in 1:21.4, 1:02.7 and 36, while Melody Belle (T Harris) looked happy in easy work over 1000m in 1:10.8 and 41.4.

On Demand (Tierney) and Rose Bowl (S Collett) wasted no time over 800m in 47.8 and 35.4, while Highlighter (Yuto) and Intelligent Patch (Yanagida) ran the same trip in 50.4 and 36.2, and Need I Say More (Bosson) and The Panther (Parma) took 51.2 and 36.8, and Prise de Fer (Bosson) 54.5 and 39.

On the No. 1 sand Matamata Slipper entry Wolfgang (S McKay) went with Iron Eagle (Pinn) over 1000m in 1:06, finishing off strongly with 600m in 36.8. The Mitigator (S McKay) was timed over the last 800m of his work in 53.8 and 38.8.
