Wellington Guineas candidates Brando and Need I Say More looked primed for their Trentham weekend assignment when paired in an impressive gallop at Matamata on Tuesday morning.

Working on the plough, Brando (Bosson) and Need I Say More (Harris) were well matched over 1000m in 1:03.2, finishing off strongly with a final 600m in 36. The Jamie Richards-trained pair are in good order for the Trentham three-year-old feature.

Stablemate and race rival Cornflower Blue (Harris) went with Tauranga Saturday entry Tauparae (Roustoby) over the same ground in 1:03.2 and 36.5. Cornflower Blue has taken improvement out of her recent fresh-up run.

New Zealand Oaks contendor Needle And Thread (C Grylls) was accompanied by Tauranga entry Master Painton (Turner) in sound work over 1200m in 1:18, the last 1000m in 1:03.2 and 600m in 36.5. Needle And Thread has trained on well from her close second in the Sunline Vase.

Oaks favourite Amarelinha (Bosson), who just beat Needle And Thread at Ellerslie, worked solo over ground, timed from the 1200m in 1:20.2, 1:05.2 and 36.8.

A quartet of fellow Oaks entries worked on the course proper against the rail in the six-metre position, where the going was dead. Sunline Vase placegetter Dragon Queen (McCall) worked boldly with Tokorangi (Yanagida) over a truly-run 1200m, clocking 1:15.5 for the full distance, 1:03.1 for the last 1000m and 35.9 for the final 600m. Carolina Reaper (C Grylls) and Canuhandleajandal (S Singh) ran the same distance comfortably in 1:17.9, 1:04.7 and 37.2.

Back on the plough, Arraignment (Fawcett) and Eagle Hunter (Leighton) prepared for their respective engagements at Tauranga on Saturday and Te Aroha Sunday when they cut out 1000m in 1:03.4 and 36.6. In similar work Tauranga entries Limentis (Winter) and Tonya (S Collett) recorded 1:03.2 and 36.8, while Katie Perrie (J Collett) took 1:05.6 and 37.5.

Trentham entry Amano (Yuto) and Cha Siu Bao (Osborne), who runs at Tauranga, went together over ground, with their last 1200m in 1:17.4, 1:02.6 and 36. Also over ground, Watch This Space (Danis) took 1:20.2, 1:05.7 and 39.4.

Lisheen (Harris) and Romantic Lady (Kamaruddin) did good work over 1000m in 1:03.8 and 36.6, Kelly Renee (Turner) and Travelling Kate (C Grylls) took 1:05.9 and 37.6, and Rhapsody In Blue (Kamaruddin) and Bonita Aurelia (Durrant) 1:04.2 and 36.8.

New Zealand Derby winner Rocket Spade (C Grylls) was allowed easy work over 1000m in 1:11.6 and 42. He will continue his Australian Derby preparation with a trial at Taupo next Tuesday.

On the No. 1 sand, Tauranga entry Bad ‘N’ Bouj (S McKay) was timed over 1000m in 1:09.2 and 39.4.

Roch ‘N’ Horse, Targhee, Ray’s In Command and Bea A Roca worked on the course proper ahead of their weekend engagements but could not be time due to poor light.
