Horses preparing for Saturday’s Manco Easter Handicap caught most attention at Matamata on Tuesday morning.
On the plough Brando (Durrant) got through solo work in impressive fashion, cutting out 1200m in 1:17.8 and quickening along the way for a final 1000m in 1:02.8 and 600m in 35.9. He has made pleasing progress since his last-start second at Awapuni and will strip fit for the big event, which will be run at Pukekohe.
Stablemate Prise de Fer (Kamaruddin), who is dual nominated for the Easter as well as the Canterbury Gold Cup at Riccarton, galloped on Monday morning when he cut out 1000m on the plough in 1:02.2 and 36.6. The weather forecast will be the decider as to which option connections take this weekend.
Summer Passage (Kumagai), who will be an interesting runner stepping up to 1600m, got through his work well over 1200m in 1:16.5, 1:02.4 and 36.2. Les Crayeres (Lammas) worked away steadily from the 1200m to run the distance in 1:22.5, quickening from the 1000m in 1:04.4 and completing the final 600m in 36.
Last-start winner Germanicus (Yanagida) was accompanied by Dragon Biscuit (Lammas) on the course proper, where the going 20m out was on better end of soft. They were timed from the 1000m in 1:08.6 and picked up readily for a final 600m in 38. Germanicus has been entered for the Easter Handicap, but may well return to Awapuni for the Anzac Mile on Sunday. Dragon Biscuit runs in the three-year-old sprint at Awapuni.
Easter Handicap lightweight Caroline Reaper Fawcett) was allowed an easy hitout on the course proper, striding over 1000m in 1:09.2 and 40.4. Stablemates Red Hussar (S Singh) and Ali Arc (Fawcett) galloped against the course proper rail set at seven metres, hitting out boldly over 1200m in 1:14.6, 1:01.2 and 35.4.
Back on the plough, Seajetz (Prastiyou) and Hovdamer (Farr) were paired over a smart 1000m in 1:02.8 and 36.2. The Paul Richards-trained Seajetz, who has run well in two lead-up trials, is forward for his Pukekohe engagement.
Oxygen (Farr) prepared for Pukekohe with good work over 1200m in 1:18.2, 1:04.5 and 37.6, while Wairau Cove (Kamaruddin) and Supreme Khan (Parmar) didn’t waste any time over 1000m in 1:04.2 and 35.8.
Diosa Luna (C Coe) and Paris Ruby (Farr) cut out the same distance in 1:03.4 and 36.8, Lightning Field Parmar) returned 1:05.2 and 35.8, Star Treasure (Farr) took 1:04.9 and 36.8, Seafoam (Cox) 1:05.8 and 36.5 and North Of Havana (Wratten) 1:08.5 and 38.2.
Over ground Mrs Twinkletoes (Farr) strode into her work, cutting out 1200m in 1:24.5, 1:07.8 and 39.6. Gingerbread (Prendergast) ran the same trip in 1:28.8, 1:11 and 41.6, while Two Madison (Kumagai) was timed over her last 1000m in 1:10.2 and 39.
On the No. 1 sand Stopalltheclocks (Turner) worked over two rounds, picking up the tempo on the second circuit and running the last 1200m in 1:22.8, 1:08.6 and 39.2.
