New Zealand 2000 Guineas favourite Savaglee confirmed his fitness for Saturday’s Riccarton classis with a sound final gallop at Matamata on Tuesday morning.
Working 18 metres out on the good course proper, Savaglee (Nishizuka) went with Te Rapa entry Phantom Dragon (Mullineaux), timed from the 1200m in 1:22.8, the last 1000m in 1:07.6 and final 600m in 38.5. The Pam Gerard-trained colt, who confirmed his place at the top of the 2000 Guineas market with his Sarten Memorial win last Wednesday, travelled strongly to the line and looked in capital order ahead of his flight to Christchurch.
Also on the course proper, Te Rapa candidate Reputation (Nishizuka) went with Clear Conscience (Mullineaux) over 1000m in 1:05.4 and 38.2, while Dragon Biscuit (Nishizuka) wasn’t after time over the same distance in 1:10.5 and 40.4.
Most other fast work took place on the plough, where Te Rapa race rivals Qali Al Farrasha (Miller) and Zantabulous (Danis) cut out 1000m in 1:04.2 and finished off with 600m in 36.6. Qali Al Farrasha has trained on well from her fresh-up win at Ellerslie, while Zantabulous, fourth in the same race, also looks very bright.
Te Rapa maiden entry Smart Love (C Grylls) caught the eye when working with Monroe (Stott) over 1200m in 1:17.8, the last 1000m in 1:03 and 600m in 36.8. Smart Love has finished second in both her starts to date and won’t be in maiden grade much longer.
Little Bit Of Love (Stott) and Do You Just (Rastrick) were also in good form in their work over 1000m in 1:03.2 and 36.5. Little Bit Of Love hasn’t raced since putting together an impressive formline through autumn and early winter, but has had two preparatory trials, while his two-year-old stablemate, a colt by So You Think, is a likely sort heading to Te Rapa.
Brazen Affair (Allen), who may head to Tauherenikau on Sunday, and Te Rapa juvenile entry La Dorado (C Grylls) were timed over 1000m in 1:04.9, the last 600m in a smart 36.2. Two other Te Akau juveniles to work well were He Who Dares (C Grylls) and Carsolio (Sheehan), who were timed from the 800m in 51.4 and 36.5.
Vendabelle (Turner) and Sailing Away (Miller) left 1200m behind in 1:18.5, 1:03 and 36.6, while Channel Surfer (Wratten) prepared for Te Rapa over the same ground in 1:19.5, 1:04.2 and 37.4.
Rocababy (Fawcett), an entry for the feature sprint at Te Rapa, completed her work well over 1000m in 1:04.8 and 37.5, as did Te Rapa maiden candidate Dubai Gold (Dellow), who was well held over the same distance in 1:06.6 and 38.4.
New Zealand 1000 Guineas favourite Alabama Lass (Turner) had plenty in reserve as she strode over 1000m in 1:10.4 and 41.8. She has done everything right since her Soliloquy Stakes win. Harlech (Dellow) was also not chasing the clock over 1000m in 1:10.2 and 39.5, while Dragon Bubbles (Dellow) stretched out well over 1000m in 1:06.6 and 38.4.
